PRIVACY
Where your record lives.
VELUM keeps your record inside this browser, with no personal account. Here is what stays where, what is sent for a moment, and how to erase it.
ON THIS BROWSER
Your record stays in this browser.
- WHAT STAYS HERE
- Your birth details, the birth details of people you save in MATCH, your first briefing, your conversations, and the search index used to find earlier conversations are stored in this browser's storage, localStorage and IndexedDB.
- CHAT HISTORY
- VELUM does not keep a separate summary of what it thinks matters. It keeps your conversations as they were, and when you ask something new it finds only the earlier moments related to that question and reads them with it.
- SEARCH INDEX
- Only when you turn memory on, the text of earlier conversations is processed briefly by the OpenAI embeddings API to build the index for finding earlier moments. The index is stored only in this browser's IndexedDB, never on VELUM's servers, and is left out of backup files; a restored device builds it again. Turning memory off erases it.
- NO SERVER COPY
- VELUM has no personal accounts, no server sync and no automatic backup. The way to move your record or keep it safe is a backup file you download yourself. Without one, clearing site data or losing or resetting the device means VELUM cannot recover your profiles or conversations.
- HOW LONG IT STAYS
- VELUM asks this browser to keep your record long term. The browser decides; if it declines, the record can be erased when storage runs low. In a Safari tab on iPhone or iPad, the record can be erased if you don't open VELUM for seven days, so we recommend adding it to your Home Screen and using it as an app. The Home Screen app has its own storage, so move your record there with a backup file.
- BIRTH INFO
- Your birth details anchor your VELUM record on this device. Changing them erases the conversations, first briefing and MATCH people on this device, and it cannot be undone. You type a confirmation before the change.
WHEN YOU ASK
Sent only while an answer is written.
- SENT FOR ANSWERS
- To write an answer, VELUM sends for a moment: your question and the conversation you're in, the first briefing made from the same profile, your birth details, and those of the MATCH person you have selected. Earlier moments and things you said in earlier conversations go with it only when memory is on. People you have not selected are not sent.
- OPENAI
- Requests to OpenAI are sent with conversation storage turned off (store:false). Under its API policy, OpenAI may still keep requests and responses for up to 30 days to monitor abuse. When VELUM launches as a full service, we plan to apply to OpenAI for Zero Data Retention to end that retention too. VELUM's servers don't store your questions, answers, birth details or conversations.
- HEALTH AND SENSITIVE DETAILS
- Whatever you write about your health, mental health, pregnancy or fertility, or religion is sent to write that answer like any other question, and is not kept on VELUM's servers. Such details from earlier conversations are sent again only when memory is on. VELUM never asks for these details, so share only as much as you want to. The consumer health data policy (HEALTH DATA) has the details.
- CLOSE BETA USAGE
- During the private beta, VELUM keeps only usage records needed to run the service: how many questions, which calculation engine, whether an answer succeeded and how long it took, and the app version. It keeps no questions, answers, birth details, conversations or calculation results. A random number made on this device is recorded to count usage; it contains no birth details. Turning memory on or off is recorded with the same number, the time and a fingerprint of the consent wording you read, as the record of your consent.
- SIGN-IN
- The shared private beta sign-in issues only a session cookie that confirms access. It creates no personal or email account and does not sync or back up your profile.
PROCESSORS
Who processes it, and where.
VELUM uses the companies below to run the service. An answer cannot be written without them; the only way to decline is not to send a question.
- OPENAI
- OpenAI (United States). Writes answers and briefings, and builds the index for finding earlier moments. Each question sends, over an encrypted connection, the question, the conversation and briefing it needs, and birth details. Kept up to 30 days for abuse monitoring (OpenAI policy).
- VERCEL
- Vercel Inc. (United States). Hosts the website. Visits leave access logs such as IP address, browser details and request time. Kept for Vercel's log retention period.
- SUPABASE
- Supabase (servers in Seoul, South Korea). Keeps the private beta usage records: question counts, response times and the random number made on this device; memory consent records (your choice, its time and a fingerprint of the consent wording); and a per-day count of crisis referrals with no number or content. Kept while the private beta runs.
YOUR CONTROL
Download it, or erase it.
- BACKUP FILE
- From chat history you can download a backup file with your birth details, first briefing, MATCH people and conversations, and restore it in another browser or the Home Screen app. The file is made on this device without passing through VELUM's servers. It is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere safe.
- DELETE
- Erase the current conversation, or all of them, from chat history. To erase your birth details and MATCH profiles as well, choose “Start over as someone else” when you log out. VELUM's servers hold nothing personal, so once erased here, your conversations and profiles remain nowhere.
- SHARED DEVICE
- On a shared device or a browser you share with family, choose “Start over as someone else” when you log out to erase this browser's record. An ordinary log out does not erase it.
- AGE
- VELUM is for adults 18 and older, and a birth date under 18 cannot start a VELUM record.
- NO TRACKING
- VELUM has no advertising and no tools that track you across other sites. It works the same whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track signal.
- CONTACT
- VELUM is run by Chung Sang Ki (Callan Chung), who is also its privacy officer: +82-10-9850-8595 (call or text) or gbear1220@gmail.com. You can ask to confirm, correct or delete your information, or to stop its processing, without an account. VELUM's servers hold no conversations, so what is on this device can be erased right away as described above.
- CHANGES
