HEALTH DATA

Consumer health data policy.

When you write to VELUM about your health, mood, pregnancy or fertility, or the medicines you take, that is health data. This page sets out where it goes, why, and how to stop or erase it.

SCOPE

The health data VELUM handles.

WHAT
What you write about your physical or mental health, diagnoses, medicines, treatment, pregnancy, childbirth or fertility, sexual and reproductive health, or gender-affirming care, and what VELUM writes about your health from your chart.
SOURCE
Only what you write, and readings from the chart calculated from the birth details you enter. VELUM does not receive or buy health data from anywhere else.

PURPOSES

Each purpose has its own basis.

ANSWERING YOUR QUESTION
Your question, the conversation you're in, your first briefing and your birth details are sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) while the answer is written. This is what's needed to give you the answer you asked for, so it is not asked separately. Nothing stays on VELUM's servers.
REMEMBERING EARLIER CONVERSATIONS
VELUM remembers earlier conversations only if you turn memory on. Then earlier conversations are processed by OpenAI embeddings to build a search index (kept only on this device), and related moments and things you said are sent with later questions. Turn it off anytime under MEMORY in chat history; from then on nothing earlier is sent, and the index on this device is erased. Each time you turn it on or off, VELUM's server keeps a record as proof of your consent: the random number made on this device, your choice and when you made it, and a fingerprint of the wording you read, never any conversation.
ABUSE MONITORING
Under its API policy, OpenAI may keep requests and responses for up to 30 days to monitor abuse. When VELUM launches as a full service, we plan to apply for Zero Data Retention to end that retention.
NEVER
Health data is never used for advertising, sold, used to train models, or used to make decisions about other people. The private beta usage records contain none of it.

RECIPIENTS

Who receives it.

PROCESSORS
OpenAI (United States; writes answers and builds the search index) and Vercel (United States; hosts the website the requests pass through) process it on VELUM's behalf. It is not shared with or sold to any other third party.

YOUR RIGHTS

Confirm it, stop it, erase it.

ON THIS DEVICE
Erase conversations from chat history, and your birth details too by choosing “Start over as someone else” when you log out. Turn memory consent off under MEMORY in chat history.
ASK VELUM
Through the contact below you can ask VELUM to confirm what health data it has processed, list everyone it was shared with, withdraw consent, or delete it. No account is needed, and it is free up to twice a year. VELUM answers within 45 days, extended once by 45 days with notice if needed, and passes deletion requests on to OpenAI. Because VELUM's servers hold no conversations, the answer will confirm that and give OpenAI's retention period.
APPEAL
If a request is refused, you can appeal through the same contact; VELUM answers in writing, with reasons, within 45 days. Washington residents whose appeal is denied can file a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General (atg.wa.gov/file-complaint).
